How do trees multiply? In nature, there are only two ways: by seeds, which is the most common, or by cuttings; that is, branches that, when broken by the action of some animal, fall to the ground and take root.

Humans have learned to propagate them also by grafting, which is a technique that consists of joining two parts of two plants of the same genus (for example, Prunus) but different species (for example, we can graft an almond branch –Almond– on a cherry tree trunk –Prunus avium– and have a tree that bears both types of fruit).

Another technique is layered. There are different types of layers: bud, simple, aerial, multiple, etc. This is recommended for example when our tree has a branch whose characteristics we like very much, and we are interested in making another tree from that branch in a simple and effective way.

In this case, we would make an air layer because when it is ready the branch would have roots, and that would be when we could separate it from the mother plant. We could also have made a cutting from that branch, but with the elbow we will ensure that the branch remains alive at all times, because it does not separate from the tree until it has taken root.
